There are many climates in Canada and they vary from the permanently frozen ice caps north of the 70th parallel to the lush vegetation of British Columbia’s west coast. Overall, however, Canada has four very distinct seasons, particularly in the more populated regions along the US border. Daytime summer temperatures can rise to 35°C and higher, while lows of -15°C are not uncommon in winter. More moderate temperatures are the norm in spring and fall. Over the years, Canadians have adapted extremely well to the colder periods of weather by installing heating in houses and cars, and by having heated public transportation systems

Using Public Transportation

Getting around in Canada is easy. Most cities have urban transportation systems, including buses, streetcars, and trains and some of the larger cities have subways. You can board these systems at regular stops along their routes. Some let you pay with cash, others require tickets. If you don’t have a ticket for the bus, you must pay with the right amount of money (exact fare). You can also buy a monthly pass or a package of tickets to save money. You can buy subway tickets at the subway station.
Maps of routes and schedules are usually available from the public transit company in your area.

Tourism

Canada is a vast country with a variety of tourist destinations. Wherever you choose to study in Canada, you will discover a multitude of cultural, leisure and other activities all year round. You can enjoy the many museums, seasonal festivals and exciting nightlife that each province and territory has to offer. TYPE OF EDUCATION

Canadian education system encompass both publicly funded and private schools, from kindergarten through to an university. Education is a provincial responsibility under the Canadian constitution, which means there are significant differences between the education systems of the different provinces. However, standards across the country are uniformly high.

Universities

Canada has a large selection of universities and colleges located in both urban and rural settings in every region of the country. Its universities are internationally known for the quality of teaching and research. Degrees from Canadian universities are considered equivalent to those from American and other Commonwealth universities. Canadian universities are largely publicly funded; as a result, they are of a consistently high quality, regardless of location or area of study. Also, they all retain a high degree of academic autonomy. Full-time student enrollments at individual universities range from less than 1,000 students to over 35,000 in the major universities. In addition, most universities have a large number of part-time or continuing education students. They offer a broad range of courses and a full range of degrees from undergraduate to doctorates and can offer certificates and professional degrees. Fees for universities differ depending on the province, institution and program of study.

Universities Colleges

Canadian university colleges offer a strong base of applied and academic programs in campus environments. As the name suggests, a university college offers university degrees as well as college diploma and certificate programs. Students can expect to find a wide range of program choices at university colleges, including English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. As a component of the Canadian university system, university colleges offer students a choice of either academically oriented university degree programs or the more practically oriented college diplomas and certificates. As part of the Canadian college system, university colleges are distinguished by their strong student support services, small classes and strong campus environments. They also may offer combined degree/diploma programs and university transfer programs.

Community Colleges

The 175 post-secondary institutions which are members of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) are officially known by a range of titles, including Community College, Technical Institute, University College and Cégep. All of these institutions have the primary function of responding to the training needs of business, industry and the public service sectors. They also meet the educational needs of vocationally oriented secondary school graduates, employment-seeking university graduates, as well as the lifelong learning requirements of the adult population. Historically, these institutions offer diplomas, as community needs change and evolve and at least 18 are now granting degrees and applied degrees. The two- to three-year (or shorter) college programs typically offer specific, vocationally-oriented curricula, as well as general academic concentrations.

Career Colleges

A technical/career college is a privately owned and operated school with the main objective of preparing students for the job market after a short period of instruction. The emphasis at technical/career colleges is on practical skills over a broad range of programs. They may specialize in specific areas such as business, computers and secretarial skills. Although privately owned, these schools are provincially approved and regulated, ensuring that program standards and quality are maintained. Career colleges have highly competitive fee structures.

A GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Once you have made a decision to study in Canada, collect as much information as possible on all aspects involved and you will need at least six months to plan and prepare for your move.

Planning

Before you apply for your student visa or “Visitor visa”, you must have a valid passport, a letter of acceptance from a Canadian school, proof that you have enough money to support yourself and your dependents for your entire stay in Canada, a letter from your sponsoring organization if you are being sponsored and a medical clearance, if required.

Canadian Colleges & Universities

Each Canadian university, university college, technical School or community college sets its own requirements. The registrars of these schools can provide information on tuition fees, health insurance, scholarships, accommodation and living expenses and language requirements.

Tuition Fees

Every student in Canada has to pay tuition fees. The fees vary from school to school and from year to year. (The registrar will help you determine the fees required.)

Languages

Canada has two official languages: English and French. You will need to know one or the other to follow course lectures and reading assignments. Some post-secondary schools might ask you to take a language test. Language requirements are set by each school.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is a must. Medical, hospital and dental care in Canada can be expensive. As a foreign student, you are not insured for these expenses by the Canadian federal government. Candidates must confirm whether the school provides health insurance for International students.

Financial Support

You must be able to prove you can support yourself and your dependents before a student authorization can be issued. A letter from your bank, a bank draft or a letter from your source of funding will show CIC officials that you can afford to pay your expenses. The cost of living in Canada varies from province to province. CIC officials in your country will tell you approximately what it will cost to live in the province where you will be attending school. For a character reference to be accepted by CIC officials, you must prove you are a responsible person and that you have no criminal record. You may be asked to provide evidence of this through your local authorities.

Health standards

You must be in good health. You may be asked for a medical certificate if you have been living in a country with a high health risk.

Student Authorization

Once you have all the letters and documents required, you may apply for your student authorization. The student authorization allows you to study in Canada. Keep it with your passport. Your student authorization may specify terms and conditions that govern your stay in Canada. Your student authorization for post-secondary study should be valid for the duration of your course of studies.

Arrival in Canada

On your arrival in Canada, you must show CIC officials the following documents: your student authorization, a valid passport, a valid visitor visa if required and any letters or papers used to obtain your student authorization. If any documents are missing or incorrect, you could be refused admission to Canada.

Canada Customs and Revenue Agency

As a foreign student studying in Canada, you are eligible for certain customs benefits, including the temporary importation into Canada of your household and personal effects. However, a number of conditions apply. We provide our clients with a comprehensive information package in this regards.

Working in Canada

Foreign students may be allowed to work while attending school. You may be allowed to work if you meet one of the following requirements: you want to work as a graduate assistant and your employment is part of a course of study, such as a work term during the year, as in cooperative programs; you want to work on campus, or you want to work after graduation in a study-related job for up to one year. Your spouse may also be allowed to apply for an employment authorization. If you work without an employment authorization, you may be in violation of the Immigration Act, and you may be required to leave Canada.
